Friends

A recent survey* suggests that the average Briton only has 3 true friends that he can rely on.

I checked my contacts list it has 430 entries, both telephone numbers and email addresses. . These are not all "friends" some are companies and suppliers for example.

There are only 4 people who are true friends, there is another but she's not in the contact list.

How many true friends do you have?

Travel to Countries with Endemics: Swine Flu / Malaria

People are being advised not to go to Mexico because of the Swine flu outbreak.

However, millions of people travel to many countries that have endemic malaria and millions die from that disease. Why is travel to those countries not banned or at least discouraged.

OK, there are anti-malarial drugs, but patently they are not 100% effective or are not taken properly or there wouldn't be so many cases.

Hopefully the current swine fever outbreak will not be severe and I am puzzled that presently, deaths have occurred only in Mexico. Why should that be

Swine Fever cull

The UK Government ordered a cull of 5 million animals when foot and mouth disease OF ANIMALS was confirmed in 2007.

What will they do now. Kill pigs, wild boar, cows and sheep who come into contact with swine?

Then foxes, (over-turn the fox huntng ban)?

Then cats that roam the country, then dogs who reside at home with cats?

Then us?

Starting where?

In Scotland where two cases have ben reported?. No there are too many Scots in important positions ......

Sex is like air. It's not that important unless you aren't getting any.

Body facts (or not)

In a past life I was a microbiologist, but haven't verified the first of the following (actually only one of them!):

It takes your food seven seconds to get from your mouth to your stomach.

One human hair can support 3 kg (6.6 lb).

The average man's penis is three times the length of his thumb.

Human thighbones are stronger than concrete.

A woman's heart beats faster than a man's.

Women blink twice as often as men.

The average person's skin weighs twice as much as the brain.

Your body uses 300 muscles to balance itself when you are standing still.

If saliva cannot dissolve something, you cannot taste it.

Women reading this will be finished now.

Men are still busy checking their thumbs.

Ibex in Val d'Isere

We saw these Ibex on the south facing slope in Val d'Isere today, April 23rd 2009.

They probably are a herd of males looking for females.

We are Emigrating (not)

We've decided to emigrate!

Two main reasons:

  1. Chris's gin bottle is nearly empty and we have some friends who are in France at present who say they have a bottle, especially for Chris on her birthday.
  2. The snow conditions here are awful and where our friends are they are excellent.
  3. Mike's made the breakfast for the last 41 years and he likes to have the odd break and let Scot, the Cordon Bleu chef make the porridge, not to mention homemade cakes, and gourmet dinners.

So, we're off tomorrow, Sunday April 19th.

Mike

PS: It is only temporary; Chris is emigrating again on April 30th, to Paxos in Greece; I don't really know why, they don't specialise in gin and the snow there is crappy too!

PPS. Mike is applying to be an immigrant to the UK before he emigrates. There are lots of reasons:

First: Where would we go to?

France is the nearest, but the last few times he's been there this year it's been expensive, and full of English people. If you get away from the English people you have the problem of the French!

There's always Germany, but as Mike hasn't forgiven them for bombing our fish and chip shop in 1944, I can hardly go there, so it's stay in the UK. because he would like to:

  1. Be near his mates
  2. Continue to have the quality newspapers, Daily Telegraph and the Times delivered every morning
  3. Watch real live cricket
  4. Be able to go to events, for example lectures at the two Universities in Leicester
  5. Keep in touch with ex-colleagues from his working days as a guest at conferences
  6. Be near several airports that offer cheap flights
  7. Be within 70 minutes of London by train
  8. Use the free buses and some trains in the UK
  9. Enjoy the ethnic diversity of Leicester, especially the restaurants
  10. Try to get a par on the first hole at Scraptoft Golf Club

So, after all the emigration might be temporary, but don't drink the gin yet, we'll be there while it lasts.

Groceries online

A major supermarket has advertised some products bought from their online Ocardo store at prices cheaper than in-store.

Does this mean a trend towards online shopping for groceries?

Who wanted to fight?

Much has been made of a couple of most regrettable incidents that happened at the mainly peaceful demonstrations during the G20 summit.

There were a few fights.

Who wanted the fights?

I suggest that the vast majority of protestors didn't want to fight.

The majority of the police didn't want to fight.

Who wanted the fights?

The media, the red top, mass market, so-called popular press and television companies, that's who.

Fights sell newspapers.

New Cricket Season 2009

It was the first day of the first-class cricket season today. Leicestershire were playing Northamptonshire at Grace Road. After a thunderstorm-ridden night, play started on time.

The ground looked almost the same as last year, albeit with a lick of paint here and there.

BUT the major addition was the appearance of a renal dialysis unit in the car park. It seems to be a semi-permanent structure.

Perhaps the Club think that it will attact more users than would a gym / fitmess centre, given the age of most of us club members!

All we need now is a coronary care unit, an orthopaedic theatre and maybe a geriatric ward.

Frigthened

Am I frightened the because the Mental Health Society report that many more people found the world to be a frightening place

In the last year I've been with usually rational people who have been frightened to fly in an aeroplane or enter a cable car.

The only time I've ben frightened recently have been when I've been in a car that they have been driving.

Get a life and don't be frightened.
